CMS Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Conditions of Participation (CoPs)
Course Curriculum
The CMS hospital conditions of participation (CoPs) on radiology and nuclear medicine have been rewritten, effective July 10, 2015. Every hospital that accepts Medicare or Medicaid must be in compliance with these regulations and interpretive guidelines.
During this session, our speaker will discuss the risks of ionizing radiation, increased patient exposure, and safety precautions to decrease radiation exposure, including staff training, care of high-risk patients, appropriate shielding, and equipment review and calibration. Sue will review the FDA initiative to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure, diagnostic and therapeutic radiology and standards, standards of care, and the order of nuclear medicine tests. Additionally, she will cover the CMS MRI requirements.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, the participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the many rewritten radiology and nuclear medicine provisions in the CoPs manual.
2. Identify the policies and procedures required for radiology by CMS.
3. Describe the hospital diagnostic radiology services a hospital must have in order to meet standards of care practice.
4. Demonstrate the order that is needed for any radiology or nuclear medicine test.
Target Audience
Anyone involved with radiology services, including, but not limited to, radiology department director, radiology medical director, radiology staff, patient safety officer, risk manager, compliance officer, regulatory affairs officers, chief operating officer, risk management, chief medical officer (CMO) emergency department physicians, clinic physicians, physicist, education department staff, chief nursing officer, hospital legal counsel, or any person in charge of ensuring compliance with CMS guidelines for radiology and nuclear medicine.
Faculty
Sue Dill Calloway has been a nurse attorney and consultant for more than 30 years. Currently, she is president of Patient Safety and Healthcare Education and Consulting and was previously the chief learning officer for the Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation. She has conducted many educational programs for nurses, physicians, and other health care providers. Sue has authored over 100 books and numerous articles. She is a frequent speaker and is well known across the country in the area of health care law, risk management, and patient safety. Sue has no real or perceived conflicts of interest that relate to this presentation.
