WEBINAR: CMS Hospital Restraint and Seclusion

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Restraint and Seclusion: Navigating the Most Problematic Standards
and Proposed Changes

Course Curriculum
Restraint and seclusion is a “hot spot” with both CMS and the Joint Commission and is a common area where hospitals are cited for being out of compliance. The restraint policy is one of the hardest to write and understand in health care today. This session will help simplify the CMS 50-page interpretive guidelines. It will also provide a crosswalk to the Joint Commission standards.
The speaker will discuss the requirements for an internal log and will review what must be documented in the medical record. She will also discuss the reporting requirements for patients who die within 24 hours of being restrained.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
1. List what hospitals must document in the internal log if a patient dies within 24 hours of being restrained with two soft wrist restraints.
2. Describe the CMS restraint education requirements for hospital staff.
3. Explain the CMS education requirements for staff who order restraints.
4. Discuss the specific items CMS requires be documented in the medical record for the one hour face-to-face evaluation on patients who are violent and/or self-destructive.
