With the country re-opening following the COVID pandemic, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and other state and federal agencies are increasing post-payment audit activity and expanding their reviews to include March 2020 and after. Attorneys at Hagwood and Tipton, Julie Mitchell and Philip Chapman, will walk you through the government’s new alphabet soup of audits and auditors, preparing you for the following:
   Who will perform the audit
   What the auditors will be looking for and;

ow to respond to and defend these audits.



Presenters:

Julie B. Mitchell is an equity shareholder at Hagwood and Tipton. Mitchell holds a master’s degree in health law (LL.M. Health Law). As an attorney whose primary focus is health care law, Mitchell’s practice encompasses such matters as: stark, fraud and abuse, Medicare and Medicaid payment issues, corporate compliance, CON law, provider and physician contracts, health care corporate matters, hospital law, DMEPOS matters, licensure and certification, HIPAA, nursing home law and health care integration. She was recently named to Best Lawyers in America in Health Law. She served as chair to the Mississippi Bar, Health Law Section for 2018-2019.

Mitchell has significant experience representing providers in health care fraud and abuse government investigations covering a wide range of matters such as billing irregularities, quality of care issues, and Stark and anti-Kickback arrangements. Mitchell has successfully negotiated settlements with numerous government entities such as the U.S. Department of Justice  and the Office of Inspector General. She also works with providers encountering Unified Program Integrity Contractor, Zone Program Integrity Contractor, Recovery Audit Contractor and Medicare Administrative Contractor audits. In her representation of health care providers on these matters, she assists clients with internal investigations, compliance development, implementation audits, and improvements and appeals.  She also advises and counsels clients in self-disclosure matters.

Mitchell represents a wide array of health care providers, such as hospitals, physicians, home health agencies, skilled nursing facilities, personal care homes, hospices, durable medical equipment suppliers, therapy companies, pharmacies and physicians.

Philip J. Chapman
is a PLLC in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Chapman is a 1997 magna cum laude graduate of Millsaps College and a 2004 cum laude graduate of Mississippi College School of Law, where he was a member of the MC Law Review. Prior to attending law school, Chapman attended medical school at the University of Mississippi from 1997 to 2000. He currently enjoys a diverse legal practice covering multiple areas and issues in health care law, including nursing home law, licensure and certification, Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement, compliance programs, fraud and abuse, HIPAA, health care contracting, health care business and regulatory matters. He is a member of the Mississippi Bar Association, American Bar Association and American Health Lawyers Association.  In addition, Chapman has lectured on numerous occasions regarding emerging issues in health care law, including prior lectures for Barristers, as well as various health care providers.
