The summer has been an invaluable learning experience for 530 nursing students across the state. The 2025 Mississippi Summer Student Nurse Externship Program is a collaboration between participating Schools of Nursing (SON) and participating hospitals. The Mississippi Center for Quality and Workforce oversees the program each year. This summer, 24 SONs and 45 hospitals applied for approval to participate. Clinical affiliations between the SONs and hospitals must be in place prior to the program’s start date. The nursing student interviews with hospitals as if he/she were applying for full-time employment. When hired, the extern must work 320 hours minimum under the guidance of a preceptor to receive 3 hours college credit. The extern is considered an employee of the hospital and must adhere to its policies accordingly. Many of these externs, after their graduation, are then hired by those same hospitals. Take a look at just a few of those 530 externs in the document contained herein. Thank you, nurse externs! Thank you, Schools of Nursing! Thank you, Hospitals! Mississippi's healthcare depends on you.
And a special thank you to the South Delta Planning and Development District who funded 20 externs in their region.
