The Medical Center's Edward Morris Story

Longevity is rarely seen in the workforce today but there is a Delta Health System employee who has spent over 52 years at the hospital.  Edward Morris began his career on October 19, 1971, and still goes to work every day between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. providing care and support to his patients and team.  Edward is a certified scrub tech in the surgical services department who has seen many changes in his years at The Medical Center.  In fact, he has witnessed four hospital name changes as well as several hospital administrators.

Born in Bolivar County, he resides in Greenville.  A widower since 2010, Edward also lost a son to COVID-19 in 2020.  He has a daughter, grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Edward began his career as an orderly in the surgery department at the General Hospital.  After a few years, he moved to transporter and eventually began his certified scrub tech career.

Edward said, “I like working, I like working here and I can’t imagine not coming to work every day. There have been many changes that I have witnessed but taking care of the patients never changes.  This is the reason I still come to work at the hospital.”  Edward has many talents including automotive work, in which he is certified, refrigeration, and other mechanical work.  He likes to ride his Harley Davidson motorcycle when he can find the time.

“Working at one location for this length of time is impressive and especially when you perform your duties with the care and professionalism that Edward does on a daily basis,” said Chrissy Nicholson, Delta Health System Chief Human Resources Officer. “We are thankful for his dedication and support to the patients, physicians, and employees.”

“When I think about what I was doing in 1971, it puts everything into perspective the length of time Edward has given to this hospital and our patients.  Our hospital is fortunate to have Edward on the team through many changes and challenges,” said Iris Stacker, Delta Health System Chief Executive Officer.  Thank you, Edward for setting an example for dedication and loyalty.”

If you think about how many surgeries Edward has been a part of, we can safely say that he has met many people in the Delta Region.
